|APRIL 27, 2013 - COVINGTON
If there is one team that always seems to give the Covington softball team trouble, it has to be Arcanum.
Last season it was Arcanum that gave Covington its first loss of the season after the Lady Buccs built a 14-0 record. Two years ago Covington had to hold off a late Trojan rally to hold on for a 4-2 win.
"Every year they play us hard," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger. "We always seem to have a game with them."
Which was the case on Friday as Arcanum jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a home run in the top of the first inning.
But Covington came back with a run in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Haley Adams.
The Lady Buccs pushed the lead to 6-2 after five innings and appeared to be well on their way to a comfortable win.
But two mental mistakes in the field where Covington fielders held the ball a little two long gave Arcanum just enough time to beat the throws and gain some momentum in a two-run sixth inning.
"We were in position to make the plays and should have been out of the inning without giving up any runs," Denlinger explained. "But we held the ball too long and didn't do a very good job of communicating in those situations."
Fortunately, Covington did make some huge defensive plays at critical times to preserve a hard-fought 6-4 win, the most runs surrendered by the Lady Buccs all year.
"How about the play by (Heidi) Cron and (Connor) Schaffer gunning down the runner at home?" Denlinger asked. "That was executed perfectly and it was a big out. If they get that run in, that's a different game."
What was also big for Covington was how it hit the ball in recording 10 hits in the contest.
"We hit the ball hard," Denlinger said. "Actually, we dominated the game statistically, but we left ten runners stranded. That's a credit to their defense, too."
Casey Yingst went the distance and struck out five while giving up just four hits.
Adams came up big at the plate with the home run and two RBI, while Schaffer tripled. Yingst and Shilt both doubled in the contest with Shilt going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
Also getting hits for Covington were Heidi Snipes, Brittanie Flora and Heidi Cron.
Covington improves to 14-0 overall and 4-0 in the CCC with a huge showdown at Bradford on Tuesday looming on the horizon.
