LADY BUCCS BEAT ANSONIA, 9-0...
Covington improved to 15-0 with an impressive 9-0 win over Ansonia to set up a huge showdown with Bradford.
Brittanie Flora blasts a base hit up the middle in Covington's 9-0 win over Ansonia on Monday.
APRIL 29, 2013 - COVINGTON
On paper, Monday's Cross County Conference matchup with Ansonia could have very well been a trap game for unbeaten Covington considering is was coming off of prom weekend and a matchup with rival Bradford awaits on Tuesday - a team that beat the Lady Buccs 4-3 last season on their home field.

Plus, Ansonia is a quality team that took Arcanum to the wire - the same Arcanum team that gave Covington all it could handle last Friday.

But with all of the distractions, there was no looking ahead for a mature Covington team as it improved to 15-0 with a convincing 9-0 win over Ansonia.

"We're playing pretty well, very focused" said Covington coach Dean Denlinger. "We've got an identity going on."

Covington scored in each of the first four innings, including a four-run third inning to take a 9-0 lead.

The big hit came on a towering solo home run by Connor Schaffer as Covington rallied 12 hits in the contest to just one for the Lady Tigers.

And it was the pitching duo of Casey Yingst and Morgan Arbogast the stymied Ansonia hitters all afternoon, combining to strike out 11 batters in the contest. They were backed up in the field by an error-free performance by the defense.

Jessie Shilt, Heidi Snipes and Brittanie Flora each went 2-3 in the contest, while Alex Gast connected on a double. Snipes and Flora both stole two bases as well.

With its unbeaten record in tact, Covington travels to Bradford tomorrow.

"Big game, huge game tomorrow," said Denlinger. "They beat us here (at Covington) last year and the Patty girl (Haley Patty) is a really good pitcher for them. It's going to be a great game."

A game that will surely draw a big crowd.
