APRIL 5, 2010 - COVINGTON
Behind a strong pitching effort by Chloe Shell, the Covington Lady Buccs shut out Versailles 6-0 on Monday in non-conference action.
Shell went the distance, striking out seven and allowing just five hits on the afternoon.
"Chloe pitched very well," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger. "She had very good control of her pitches and mixed things up very well."
She also pitched herself out of an early jam as Versailles had runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the second inning. But Shell struck out the next two batters and forced a ground out to second to get out of the inning.
Meanwhile, the Covington offense was putting runs on the board - scoring two in the first, one in the second and two more in the third for a 5-0 lead.
The final Covington run came in the bottom of the fifth for the 6-0 victory.
"This was a nice effort by the girls to bounce back from our first loss (to Indian Lake)," Denlinger said. "We got all 17 players in the game too, so I'm pretty pleased."
Covington tallied 13 hits in the contest. Sarah Westfall once again had the hot bat as she went 2-2 with two doubles, two RBI and a stolen base.
Shelby Hoblit went 3-3 with and RBI and a stolen base, while Hannah Pond had three hits in four at bats with a double.
Aubrye Cain drove in a run on a 2-4 day and Conner Schaffer also had a pair of hits in three tries with an RBI to go along with her effort.
The final Covington player to record a hit was Heidi Snipes, who when 1-3 with a stolen base.
"We're getting better, but we still have a ways to go," said Denlinger. "Our younger kids continue to improve."
Covington improves to 5-1 on the season and will host Bethel tomorrow.
