LADY BUCCS CRUISE BY TRI-VILLAGE...
Thirteen hits and two home runs led to a 12-1 run-rule victory over Tri-Village for the Covington Lady Buccs.
APRIL 30, 2010 - COVINGTON
After an emotional week that consisted of two thrilling one-point victories over Greenville and Newton, the Covington Lady Buccs were thrilled to get a victory without any suspense.
"We're tired," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger after his team defeated Tri-Village 12-0 in five innings Friday. "We've had an emotional week, so it was nice to have one like this tonight."
The Lady Buccs wasted little time of putting runs on the board as they scored eight runs in the first inning. Both Connor Schaffer and Carole Basye connected on home runs in the inning.
"We didn't really have any problems against their pitching," said Denlinger of the 13 hits and two long balls his team accumulated in the contest.
Covington scored two more runs in the third as Denlinger saw to it that every player on the roster received a chance to contribute.
"We got all 17 players in tonight, including Zoe Reck," Denlinger said. "This was her first action of the season (due to an injury)."
And Reck brought the Covington contingent to its feet as she crushed the very first pitch thrown to her. The ball sailed well over the left field fence, but unfortunately landed in foul territory.
Still, freshman's presence gives Covington another threat of power at the plate, something the Lady Buccs have showcased in big games as of late. In the past three games Covington has hit four home runs.
"We're playing pretty good right now," said Denlinger. "We have very good attitudes and our senior leadership is outstanding right now."
Recording hits for Covington were Aubrye Cain, Brittany Flora, Hannah Pond, Sarah Westfall, Shelby Hoblit, Connor Schaffer, Halley Roberts, Carole Basye, Emily Hicks and Casey Yingst. Schaffer and Basye homered, while Cain tripled and Pond connected for a double.
Halley Roberts went four innings, striking out nine and allowing just one hit. Casey Yingst picked up the save, facing three batters and striking out two. Neither pitcher gave up a walk.
It all led to an early evening for Covington with the 12-0 run-rule in five innings to push its record to 18-3 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
