LADY BUCCS REBOUND AGAINST TRAIL...
The Covington Lady Buccs rebounded from their first loss of the season to beat National Trail 11-1.

April 16, 2009 - NEW PARIS
The Covington Lady Buccs rebounded from their first loss of the season two days ago to Miami East with a convincing 11-1 victory over National Trail.

"It was good to get a win after what happened Tuesday," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger.

Halley Roberts went five innings on the mound for Covington and allowed just two hits in a 16-strikeout and one-walk effort. She was relieved by Kristen Boggs in the sixth, who struck out one and picked up the save.

"Halley had very good control tonight," Denlinger said. "She didn't miss her spots very often and had a nice snap to the ball."

And Roberts had plenty of support behind the plate.

"Sarah Westfall does a very nice job behind the plate," Denlinger praised of his catcher who never played the position at the high school level until this year. "She compliments our pitchers very well and has really came into her own as a catcher."

Neither team scored until Covington put up a run in the fourth inning.

National Trail followed with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score, but Covington finally broke loose in the fifth and sixth innings with a combined ten runs.

"We got out to a slow start, but once we started hitting we were able to pull away from them," said Denlinger.

Covington racked up 12 hits on the day with Westfall leading the way with a triple on a 3-for-4 effort.

Michelle Leistner was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Halley Roberts helped herself out with a 2--for-4 day.

Katie Dickey, Shelby Hoblit, Hannah Pond, Carole Bayse, Haley Smith and Shelby Kilm all recorded a hit. Smith and Kilm drove in two runs, while Hoblit doubled and drove in a run.

"We had two freshman come in and drive in two runs in their only at bats," said Denlinger of Smith and Kihm.

The victory improves Covington's record to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in the CCC.

The Lady Buccs travel to Tri-County North tomorrow in CCC action.
