FOURTH SHUTOUT IN A ROW FOR LADY BUCCS...
Thanks to solid pitching and another outstanding defensive effort, the Covington Lady Buccs recorded their fourth straight shutout.
April 23, 2009 - COVINGTON
It was an uneventful evening against Arcanum for the Covington Lady Buccs, but they'll take. That's because the 2-0 victory was another win, which improves Covington's record to 12-1 on the season.
"There wasn't a lot of offense, that's for sure," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger. "We only had four hits tonight."
And Denlinger had an explanation for the limited hitting.
"We had the (pitching) machine cranked up into the 60s to prepare for the Twin Valley South pitcher," Denlinger explained. "I think it threw us off a little bit tonight because we were way out in front."
The hits were limited, but one of those hits was a big one as Carole Bayse connected for a two-run double in the second inning that scored Halley Roberts and Hannah Pond.
And it was all Covington would need as Chloe Shell was in command on the mound, while the Lady Bucc defense was as solid as ever.
Shell went the distance and only allowed four hits, while striking out four and not allowing a single walk.
Arcanum did put the ball in play, but Covington played error-free ball in assisting in the shut-out.
"Chloe only had four strikeouts, so they were putting a lot of balls in play," Denlinger described. "We're doing a good job of fielding the balls and keeping everything in front of us. But it does help having good pitching though."
Michelle Leistner and Bayse both doubled in the contest, while the other two Covington hits came from Katie Dickey and Halley Roberts.
Covington looks to continue its winning ways tomorrow at rival Bradford.
