It was a perfect afternoon for the Covington Lady Buccs in the opening round of the sectional tournament against Yellow Springs.

Not only did four Covington pitchers combine to pitch a perfect game, but it came in the first tournament game ever played in Covington.

"It was really neat to have a tournament game here for the first time in school history," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger after his team put on a dominating display in a 16-0 victory. "Having it hear made this that much more special."

What was also special for the Lady Buccs is they were able to recognize one of their favorite fans, who religiously follows the team wherever they go.

Prior to the game the team presented Gearhardt Pohlschneider (known as Pohley) a team jacket - a gift that came from the heart.

"That's something the girls wanted to do for Pohley," Denlinger said. "He's always there and from what I've been told he's been a life-long supporter of Covington athletics."

Denliger was introduced to Pohley earlier in the season in an unexpected manner.

"Earlier in the season Pohley came into the dugout before the game and was looking at my scorecard and going through my books," laughed Denlinger. "I didn't know what to think, but one of the girls told me not to worry about it because he does it all the time. He just wanted to make sure everything was in order I guess."

After Pohley was recognized he immediately put on his new jacket and sat in his familiar seat beside the team's dugout.

And he witnessed a clinic by the Lady Buccs as they showcased impressive hitting, pitching and defense throughout the contest.

Kristen Boggs, Cloe Shell, Halley Roberts and Sarah Westfall each saw action on the mound and combined to strike out 11 of the 15 batters they faced. Not one Yellow Springs players reached base in the contest.

"That's impressive," said Denlinger in regards to what his pitching staff accomplished. "All four of them threw the ball very well."

The Lady Buccs' defense backed them up as the four times Yellow Springs made contact the hitters were thrown out at first.

And, Covington's hitters pounded the ball at will as they connected for 15 hits on the afternoon.

"We were able to play everyone and all but one of the kids got on base," Denlinger explained. "It was nice to see so many girls get hits tonight."

But the biggest hit came from Kristen Swabb, who wrapped a double in center in the fourth inning.

Swabb was 2-for-2 on the afternoon.

"Swabby getting a double like that was really special," Denlinger said. "She's just one of those kids you look at and you can't help but smile. She's just a great kid. She has a great attitude and gives you everything she's got all the time. She's the type of kid you need to build a great program."

Another Covington hitter connected for a double, but would have been a home run if not for a strong wind blowing in from left field.

"Brittany Arnett had a nice double," said Denlinger. "On any other day that probably goes over the fence."

Erin Christian and Shelby Hoblit each went 2-for-3. Christian also doubled twice and drove in a run, while Hoblit doubled once and recorded three RBI.

Chloe Shell connected for two hits on a 2-for-4 afternoon with two RBI, while Jessica Snipes and Halley Roberts each connected for two-run doubles.

Covington improves to 16-8 on the season and will host Springfield Central Catholic on Thursday.

And you can bet Pohley will be wearing his new jacket.
