After his four-day softball camp Covington coach Dean Denlinger couldn't hide his excitement for what lies ahead for Covington Softball.
"Man, there's some talent out here," Denlinger said with a smile. "All of these girls can play. The future looks bright in Covington."
Over the four days the girls were put through various drills to teach fundamentals in different aspects of the game. Denlinger received instruction help from seven of his high school players, his assistant coach Ed Boggs and youth softball coach Shon Schaffer. The high school players who helped were Kristen Boggs, Michelle Leistner, Chloe Shell, Sarah Westfall, Shelby Hoblit, Carol Bayse and Haley Roberts.
And the girls took to the teaching with ease.
"I'm amazed at how well the kids picked things up and improved with each repetition", Denlinger said. "Each time they did a drill, they got better. You could she the improvement from the first day to the last day of camp."
The final day of camp gave the girls an opportunity to use what they learned in a controlled scrimmage as the fourth, fifth and sixth graders took on the seventh and eighth graders.
The camp then concluded with each participant receiving a camp t-shirt and a softball followed by the selection of three "Campers of the Week". Those selections were fourth grader Ashley Cecil, fifth grader Brooke Gostomsky and eighth grader Jessie Shilt. They were chosen by the high schoolers for their attitude, effort, focus, hustle and teamwork.
And at the end of the day Denlinger was already looking forward to next year and the years to come.
"Seeing all this talent it makes you wish they were all coming in as freshman next year," he said. "But it's good to see that there's talent coming up in each class down to the fourth grade. Covington softball is in good shape."
And Covington softball just got better thanks to Denlinger's camp. For those who missed it, there's always next year.
