A STORYBOOK AFTERNOON FOR COVINGTON...
The Lady Buccs belted three home runs, one being a grand slam by Erin Christian, in a 15-0 victory over Springfield Central Catholic.

Kristen Boggs was on her game from the mound.
May 15, 2008 – COVINGTON
Covington coach Dean Denlinger couldn't have written a better script for his seniors to go out in their final game on their home field.

Not only did Covington dominate Springfield Central Catholic 15-0 in five innings, but three girls belted home runs - one being a grand slam in Erin Christian's final at bat on the Covington softball field.

"How cool is that," said Denlinger in regards to Christian's final at bat. "My daughter (Katie Denlinger) was sitting behind the fence and she is good friends with Erin. When Erin came up to bat Katie told her to go yard. Sure enough, Erin belted it over the fence for a grand slam."

The other two home runs were a little less dramatic, but just as important as Carole Bayse and Kristen Boggs cleared the fence in the contest.

"We hit the crap out of the ball tonight," Denlinger said. "Everything we did was working tonight."

And it was working from the outset as Covington scored seven runs in the first inning by executing Denlinger's game plan to perfection.

"We did some of the small things very well," he said. "Things like slapping and dragging. We bunted very well too. When we swung away we hit the ball hard."

While the Lady Bucc bats were red hot, the Covington pitchers were on their game too.

Kristen Boggs and Chloe Shell combined for the two hitter as Boggs picked up the win and Shell the save.

"Our pitching was really good," said Denlinger. "Kristen is probably pitching better right now than she has all season and Chloe continues to do a fine job."

Several Lady Buccs had big nights at the plate with Christian leading the way with a 3-for-3 night. She doubled twice, drove in six runs and stole a base to go along with her grand slam.

Bayse was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI, while Boggs homered and drove in three runs.

Sarah Westfall had a big hit with a two-run double as Covington pounded out nine hits on the day.

And it all came against a team that beat Arcanum - the same Arcanum team that run-ruled Covington earlier in the year.

"I don't know if that was an extra incentive, but the girls were ready to play tonight," Denlinger explained. "We may have had our best infield of the season before the game. I knew then that the girls were ready to play. We are peaking at the right time."

Which is good for Covington as rival Newton is next up for the Lady Buccs on Saturday in the Sectional Final.

"That will be a great game and we are looking forward to it," Denlinger said. "They beat us pretty good a few weeks ago so we'll be ready to play."

The game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am at Bethel High School.
