2008 COVINGTON LADY BUCCS...
The more things change, the more they stay the same as the Covington Lady Buccs have high expectations for another successful season.
A lot has changed since the Lady Buccs fell to Triad in the Regional Tournament a year ago, but the expectations remain the same.
Gone are four talented players lost to graduation in Michelle Barhorst, Jesie Jennings, Sarah Ciriegio and Kylie Lavey as well as the highly successful tenure of Lynnette Roeth.
But the return of standout pitcher Jessica Shrout and a talented group of returning players makes the coaching transition for new head coach Dean Denlinger that much easier. It also makes for the usual expectations of challenging for a league title and a deep tournament run.
The Lady Buccs have always been fortunate to have solid pitching and this year will be no different as Kristen Boggs and Jessica Shrout combine as one of the top duos in the area. Sophomore Sarah Westfall and freshman Chloe Shell also have pitching experience and may be utilized throughout the season.
Also returning for Covington will be Erin Christian, Katie Dickey, Michelle Leistner, Halley Roberts, Jessica Snipes and Shelby Hoblit.
Christian, Dickey and Leistner had a knack for getting the clutch hit a year ago, while Snipes, Leistner and Christian each saw significant action in the infield.
As in years past, the Cross County Conference will be loaded this season with talented teams, which makes for an open race for the conference title.
Traditional powers Newton and Bradford appear to be strong once again, while Miami East, Ansonia, Tri-Village, Franklin Monroe and Arcanum will be in the hunt as well.
