The Covington Lady Buccs dropped their first contest of the season on a cold, snowy afternoon at New Bremen. The host Cardinals took advantage of Covington mistakes for a 4-0 victory.
"We had too many mental errors in the field," said Covington coach Lynette Roeth. "Three of New Bremen's four runs were unearned, so it was frustrating."
Despite picking up the loss, starting pitcher Jessica Shrout went the distance in a solid effort for Covington.
"Jessica pitched very well under the circumstances (the weather conditions)," Roeth said. "We just didn't back her up in the field."
New Bremen scored two runs in the second, and a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Covington managed to put runners in scoring position throughout the contest, but wasn't able to break through in clutch situations to score runs.
"We hit the ball well, but not when we had runners in scoring position," Roeth explained. "We had a runner at third in the first and runners at second and third in the second, but couldn't bring them in. It was like that all afternoon."
Katie Dickey continues to produce from the plate as she went 2 for 3 on the day.
The loss drops Covington's record to 3-1 with a long road trip to National Trail on Tuesday.
