The Covington Lady Buccs overcame a disappointing effort against Bradford by dominating Franklin Monroe en route to an 11-1 win.
April 20, 2007 COVINGTON
After a disappointing effort last night in a 2-1 loss to Bradford, Covington coach Lynnette Roeth had a heart-to-heart with her team.
"We talked about the difference from being a good team and a great team," said Roeth. "We can't leave people on base when they are in scoring position and we can't have mental errors. The girls really responded tonight."
More focused and motivated, the Lady Buccs thoroughly dominated Franklin Monroe en route to an 11-1 victory in five innings.
Kristen Boggs went the distance in recording a four-hitter. She struck out four and didn't give up a single walk.
The Lady Buccs started off the contest with two runs in the first as an Erin Christian double scored Jesie Jennings and Michelle Barhorst scored on a wild pitch.
Covington scored four more runs in the second as Katie Dickey drove in Michelle Leistner with a single and Jesie Jennings singled to score Jennifer Lowry. Michelle Barhorst bunted to move Dickey to third and Jennings to second and Boggs singled to drive in the two runners.
After scoring another run in the fourth, Covington ended the contest with another four-run inning in the fifth.
"We played much better tonight than we did last night against Bradford," Roeth stated. "The girls came ready to play tonight and it showed."
Covington hit the ball at will, recording 13 hits and drawing four walks. But it was the sound defensive effort that pleased the coach.
"We've been working toward the game where we have no errors," Roeth explained. "We were close tonight. The one error we had was a hustle error and I'll take that any day. I'm very pleased with our effort tonight."
The Lady Buccs improve to 7-2 on the season and 4-1 in Cross County Conference play. Covington is back in action next Tuesday at Mississinawa Valley.
