| LADY BUCCS FALL TO ANSONIA, 1-0...
The bats went into hibernation as the Lady Buccs could only record three hits in a 1-0 loss to Ansonia.
May 1, 2007 COVINGTON
After Monday's exciting victory over Miami East, the Covington Lady Buccs looked to keep the momentum going in another home contest against Ansonia. Unfortunately, the bats went into hibernation as Covington could only manage three hits in a 1-0 loss.
"We didn't swing the bat very well," said Covington coach Lynette Roeth. "We struck out nine times and when we did hit the ball we didn't make solid contact. You can't win if you don't score runs."
Defensively, the Lady Buccs played well enough to win. However, one critical mistake allowed Ansonia to score the only run of the game in the sixth inning.
"They hit a ground ball to short that we mishandled," Roeth described. "The ball went clear to the fence, which scored the runner from first."
The Lady Tigers could only manage just one hit against Jessica Shrout and the Lady Bucc defense. Shrout went the distance once again as she struck out 10 and walked only three. One of those walks was unfortunately the winning run.
"Jessica pitched as well as you could expect and we didn't play bad defensively," Roeth said. "We played well enough to win on the defensive end. We just didn't hit the ball well enough."
Covington had runners on second base in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth, but could only move one of those runners as far as third base. Unlike Monday, Covington just couldn't come up with the clutch hit.
Of the three hits, Jennifer Lowry recorded two of them, both singles. Michelle Barhorst had the third hit, a double in the sixth inning.
With rival Newton coming to town tomorrow, the Lady Buccs will have to have short memories. It will be an opportunity to get back on a high note, much like Monday's victory over Miami East.
The loss drops Covington's record to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in the CCC.
