The Covington girls golf team just closed out the regular season with the Cross County Conference Tournament and look forward to post-season success.
Sarah Slusher drives a ball on Thursday at Stillwater Valley Golf Course.

The Covington girls golf team was limited on Thursday due to an injury and another golfer missing due to a previous commitment, which resulted into no score as a team with just three golfers able to compete.

The three Covington golfers performed well as Sarah Slusher led the way by carding a team-low 112 at the Stillwater Valley Golf Course in Versailles. Katie Hembree finished with 121 and Emma Elson tallied a 157.

Next up for Covington is the post-season with the sectional tournament slated to begin next Wednesday at Stillwater Valley Golf Course.

Coach Sweigart explains a rule to Emma Elson on Thursday.

Tuesday night, the Lady Buccs visited Highland Lakes course in Richmond, Indiana playing against National Trail.  The Lady Blazers, led by medalist Makenna Jones' 38 defeated the Lady Buccs 180-233.
Covington was led by senior Morgan Lowe, carding a 50.

Obviously, I am pleased with our performance on Monday night, with our best team round at a 214.  If you were to tell me that I would have two scores under 50 this season, I wouldn't believe you.  But give the girls all the credit, they have continued to get better and better.  We are hitting our best golf at the perfect time of the season, with our conference tournament coming up Thursday.

We ran into a very talented NT team tonight (Tuesday) and they were able to capitalize on some difficult putting greens.  I was pleased with the adversity some of our girls played with tonight.  But at the end of the night, we needed to make putts and shots count, and they did not.

Words cannot express how much of an impact Morgan Lowe has been for our team the past three years, and we are definitely going to miss her next season.  Her positive attitude is contagious, and she strives for greatness and has a never quit mentality that is a perfect example for our underclassmen to follow.  I am so proud of her accomplishments in golf and am honored to be her coach.

The Covington Lady Buccs Golf team picked up a win tonight, Thursday, August 29 against the lady pirates of Riverside by a score of 219 to 237. Medalist for tonight's round was Katie Hembree, shooting her career low of a 46. Low score for the lady pirates, was Rachel Taylor with a 53.

-Our team is improving as the season moves along. At our halfway point, I am very pleased with our progress from August 1st. The girls keep finding a way to get better each and every round, which is our goal - win or lose.

Katie played a career match tonight and struck the ball really well. Morgan Lowe also had back to back rounds in the 40's this week, which has not been done in a while for the Lady Buccs.

The Lady Buccs lost tonight to the lady bees of Bethel at Echo Hills by a score of 213 to 229. Covington's Morgan Lowe was the medalist for the match, scoring a 47. Bethel was led by Kenna Grey's 48.

Our team played really well tonight, especially not playing a round of golf since Thursday. This round (229) has been our lowest team score this season and we are continuing to get better. I thought that Morgan played a great round and she continues to improve each round she plays.

On Tuesday, Covington hosted Miami East. East defeated Covington by a match score of 186 to 235. Medalist for the match went to Paige Lawson, shooting a 36. Low round for the Lady Buccs went to Katie Hembree, shooting a career best 51.

Tonight, Thursday, the Lady Buccs hosted National Trail in a rain soaked match. Low round for the Lady Buccs went to Morgan Lowe, shooting a 53.

"This week has been a great improvement towards our season long goal of building confidence. Our team scoring is getting lower and our girls are making and taking shots they feel they can hit.

Katie Hembree has done a tremendous job of making a few adjustments at the range and is striking the ball as well as I have seen from her in the past two years. She is setting herself up for success in her approach shots which is dropping her scores to where she expects them to be.

Tonight (Thursday) was tough playing the back nine at Echo, because we have not played a course similar to that recently. But the scores were better than I expected on a rainy, soggy night at the course.

Having Morgan Lowe return to our team is a tremendous advantage to our scores. She has been a great lift to our team, not just in her abilities, but her leadership and positive attitude.

I put her on the spot playing against East Tuesday night, as she just graduated, with honors, from National Guard basic training on Friday. She did not swing the club as much as she wanted, but I felt that she could only get better by playing an actual round."

Tri Village won a conference match against the Lady Buccs of Covington with a score of 215 to Covington's 258. Medalist for the match was Tri Village's Andi Bietry, shooting a 44. The low score for the Lady Buccs was on behalf of Sarah Slusher, shooting a 47.

While the Lady Buccs were not victorious, there was a significant piece of history made on behalf of Sophomore Sarah Slusher. Slusher made a hole in one in Tuesday night's match, the first ace in Covington High School's golf program history (both boys & girls) Slusher made the ace on the Beechwood's Lakeview course hole #8, a par 3.

While it was not a successful night for the team, it was a memorable day for the program, one that the four ladies playing in the group will never forget.
