The Covington boys golf team had something to prove at the 2009 CCC Tournament, Thursday.
And they did that, finishing second in the final standings to Bethel.
Bethel followed a perfect regular season by winning the CCC tournament to cement their spot atop the standings with a 348 score.
Covington was second with a 352 total, while Twin Valley South was third with a 356 total. Miami East was seventh with a 363, while Newton was 12th with 459.
After a loss to Ansonia Tuesday, Covington coach Bill Wise knew a CCC title would be a difficult task.
“Sure, we would have like to have won,” he said. “But, we were going to need some help. Bethel beat us by two shots during the season and four shots today. But, we finished second. Last year, we came in third and finished something like sixth or seventh.”
Sophomore Christian Carder led the Buccs with an 84, while Chris Beckstedt had an 85, earning both All-CCC honors. Other Covington scores were Devan Selanders 90, Andrew Tobias 93, Sam Slusher 95, Martin Leistner 96.
Selanders was named special mention, while Tobias received honorable mention honors.
“Christian (Carder) is peaking at the right time,” Wise said. “He really played well today. We had one score that hurt us. But, I know that guy will come back and play well Monday (at sectionals).”
