A GOOD START TO SEASON FOR THE BUCCS...
Despite a lackluster effort at Greenville, the Covington boys golf team had a solid first week of the 2009 season.

GREENVILLE INVITATIONAL - Aug 17, 2009
After a fast start to the season, the Covington Buccaneers hit a rough afternoon by placing 12th out of 16 teams in the Greenville Invitational. The Buccs only shot a 386 on the afternoon.

"We had a bad day at the course," said Bill Wise, Covington's golf coach. "The scores were pretty high all-around. The greens were firm and fast and the tees were all the way back. The Greenville C.C. may have been more course than we could handle at this point of the season. Missing Martin Leistner to the fair didn't help, but we just didn't play well. Hopefully we can rebound and have a good week of practice before the next match, our league opener on the 24th at Echo Hills against Tri-Village."

Eric Beckstedt - 90

RUSSIA DUAL - Aug 13, 2009
The Covington Buccaneers played very well in a dual against Russia, but the Raiders tore up the corse with a school record 145 - betting the Buccs by 18 strokes.

"My guys played well but Russia played outstanding golf," said Covington coach Bill Wise. "Eric had a nice 1 over par round. My 2 man (Tobias) had to take a 10 on a hole but recovered for a 44. Christian Carder came through with a decent round of 42. Sam shot a 45 the first time ever seeing the course."

CCC PREVIEW - Aug 14, 2009
The Covington Buccaneers had a monster day on the golf course Friday by winning the CCC Preview by 24 strokes over second place Bethel.

The Buccs tallied 223 team points in "Ryder Cup" format, while Bethel had 247 points and Arcanum 252 points.

The format consisted of each team broken down into 3 groups of two and each group played 6 holes best ball (best score between the pair), 6 holes alternating shots, and 6 holes as a "scramble" (both hitting from the same place each time). The final score for each team is the total for all 3 pairs on your team. National Trail didn't qualify as they only had 4 golfers and couldn't form 3 "teams".

And Eric Beckstedt and Andrew Tobias teamed for a 70.

"Obviously, I'm very pleased with the play of the team and I am excited for the season," said Covington coach Bill Wise. "This preview put a pretty big target on our backs and we have to be able to live up to the high expectations. On the bus prior to the match, I told the boys to go out and make a statement to the rest of the league and show them that they better be on top of their games when they play us this year."

And the Buccs took the pep talk to heart.

"I also told the kids that this tournament means nothing as far as league standings go, but if we play well, we will be everyones's "target"," Wise continued. "I think we are ready for the challenge. I knew coming in to the season that the four juniors would be strong but I am pleasantly surprised by the play of Christian Carder and Sam Slusher. These two boys have stepped into varsity roles and are meeting the challenge. I feel confident that either one of these two can bring in a good score if someone else has a bad round."

SCOTT HOMAN MEMORIAL - Aug 10, 2009
Covington finished 9th out of 18 teams. I was extremely pleased with our play. Prior to the match, I was hoping for 4 scores in the 90's and we we came in with 3 scores in the 80's! My four returning lettermen are much more confident this year and they are making smarter choices in the area of course management. Freshman Sam Slusher had a good round for his first time at Piqua C.C. and seemed to handle the varsity experience well.
