| BUCCS IMPROVE ON LAST YEAR'S PERFORMANCE...
Despite some frustrating turn of events, the Covington Buccaneers improved on last year's effort in the CCC Tournament.
SEPTEMBER 17, 2008 - VERSAILLES It wasn't the result Covington coach Bill Wise was looking for, but it was a significant improvement over last year as the Buccs placed seventh at the Cross County Conference tournament on Wednesday.
"The results are a bit lower than we had hoped but not being able to count our 2 man's score didn't help," said Wise. "Eric Beckstedt was having a bad day, as he developed a wicked hook."
Beckstedt also made a procedural error that ended up getting him disqualified.
"With even an average score, Beckstedt would have qualified for all-league," Wise explained. "But the league rules state that you must finish the tournament. We are going to chalk this up as a learning experience and move on."
The Buccs did receive a big day from Clark Manson, who tallied a 77.
"Clark Manson had a real nice day," Wise said. "He shot a 77 and ended up finishing 3rd in the Player-Of-The-Year race. He had the third best average of the 15 all-league golfers."
With the regular season out of the way, Covington looks to see more improvement in sectional play at Beechwood on Monday.
"There are a lot of good teams and it will be difficult to qualify to districts as a team," said Wise. "Hopefully we can at least have an individual make it out (of sectionals)."
