The Covington Buccaneers finished seventh out of 19 teams at the Versailles Invitational on Saturday with a combined score of 343 on a par 72 at Stillwater Valley.
"The boys played well today," said Covington coach Bill Wise. "We are doing a good job of avoiding the round-ruining, big number holes that have plauged us in past years."
The success on a tough course is something Wise is please with, especially considering the team will compete on the same course later this year.
"Stillwater Valley is the course where our league championship will be played and this tournament gave the guys another opportunity to see the course," Wise continued. "The team is gaining confidence with each match and we were able to compete with the league teams that were here."
Clark Manson and Devan Selanders led Covington with team lows of 84, while Eric Beckstedt tallied an 85 and Martin Leistner shot 90.
"Devan Selanders played a solid round with nothing worse than a bogey and Martin Leistner carded a 90 despite being attacked and repeatedly stung by a swarm of hornets," Wise explained.
Wise is hoping the confidence his young team is gaining with each outing eventually leads to bigger and better things.
"Obviously, next week's match against F.M. is a big one for us and it is at home (Echo Hills)," he said. "The team plays well at Echo and they are really eager to break the team score record of 154. Their earlier 157 against Mississinawa was only 3 strokes from the record."
