BOYS CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW
Covington graduated four runners from last years district runner-up and regional qualifying team, but returns plenty of talent to make another run in 2014.
"Nate Dunn, Alex Schilling, and Sam Sherman were all three in our top five last year and they hear the clock ticking, so they have been working incredibly hard," said Covington coach Josh Long.
Schilling, Dunn and Sherman will likely lead Covington once again in the majority of the races, but the Buccs have a quality group of returning letter winners who wills core valuable points throughout the season - Jared Hagan, Ryan Hembree, Josh Sowers and Cale Wagner.
Junior Conner Ryan also has potential to be one of the top five runners in his first year of Cross Country after playing two years of football.
Plus, the Buccs have a very talented group of freshmen in Hunter Brumbaugh, Mark Barga, Matt Carder, Mason Dilley, Spencer Hogue, Dylan Kelly, Tanner Kimmel and Nathan Lyle.
"We have several boys that will be competing for the rest of the varsity spots, which will make us much better as the season progresses," said Long. "Our goal is to continue to improve throughout the season and run our best when it counts."
In a very competitive Cross County Conference, Covington will surely be tested late in the season.
"Our league is going to be very competitive this year," Long said. "If our boys continue to work hard and stay healthy we should be in the mix for league."
Which hopefully leads to a strong push at a state birth. |
