|2010 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
The potential is there for another stellar year for the Covington girls cross country team.
The Lady Buccs had an outstanding year in 2009. The girls won the League title for the first time since 2000, and qualified for Regionals - - the first time in 8 years. Last years team was the fastest overall team in school history and we bring back our top seven girls this year.
And Covington coach Libby Long would like to build onto it in 2010.
"We really want to build on last years success," said Long. "But at the same time the girls have to understand that if they want to equal or outdo last years success they have to continue to work hard and encourage each other. So far, they have."
Leading the way for the Buccs will be all-league runners Tara Snipes, Carrie Spurgeon, Casey Yingst, and Jessie Shilt. Emily Fields, Kayla Fissel and Julianna Simon also return from last years varsity team. These girls have a lot of experience, but our team this year could see many different combinations for our top spots. Other runners that will be looking to earn a varsity position include Sophomores Brittany Diltz and Kayleigh Cecil, and Rachel Carder, and Freshmen Haley Adams and Hannah Retz.
"I believe one of the keys to having a successful season will be the leadership of our three Seniors," Long said. "Fields, Fissel, and Spurgeon do an excellent job of encouraging and being a positive role model for the underclassmenwhich is a great asset."
Especially with the potential in the younger classes.
"We have a talented group of young ladies that work very hard," said Long. "We are looking forward to competing in the upcoming weeks."
