GIRLS CLAIM FIRST, BOYS SIXTH AT SPRINGFIELD...
There were some memorable performances by the high school and junior high cross country teams at the George Rogers Clark Invitational in Springfield.

The junior high girls placed fifth as a team.
SEPTEMBER 26, 2009 - SPRINGFIELD
The girls cross country team placed First at the George Rogers Clark Invitational on Saturday.

"This is the first time in years that we have won a race," said Covington coach Libby Long. "Even though the course was muddy mess, the girls knew they had to focus on their places, and not their times."

Covington's top five started at the front of the pack and stayed there the whole race.

"They knew they would have to all stay as close together if they wanted win the race," Long said.

Out of 131 runners, Carrie Spurgeon and Tara Snipes both placed in the top 10, and Emily Fields, Jessie Shilt and Casey Yingst all finished in the top 20.

Kayla Fissel, Julianna Simon, Kayleigh Cecil, Raquel Brant, and Erin Waterfall were all in the top 60.

"To have all our girls in the top half of the race is impressive," said Long. "Our pack running is our strength, and the girls know they have to help each other out to be the best we can be. We are looking forward to the County Meet this Saturday."

Places and times are:
Carrie Spurgeon 8th - 21:31
Tara Snipes 10th - 21:38

The boys cross country team placed 6th out of 18 teams.

"This was the first time we had ever ran at this course and the boys found it quite challenging," boy's coach Josh Long said. "This course had all challenges of a great cross country course with creeks, woods and plenty of hills. This was not a race where the boys were going to run their fastest times, so they really just had to focus on their places."

Covington's top four runners all placed in the top 50 with the top two finishing in the top twenty out of a total of 207 runners.

"The boys are really focusing on closing the gaps we have between our top five," Long said. "If we continue to do that, we are going to continue to improve over the next couple of weeks when the meets start getting important."
