The cross country teams competed at the Bob Schul Invitational on Saturday. The Bucc girls placed 3rd, and the boys placed 6th.
"The Bucc girls had an impressive day," said Covington coach Libby Long. "All the girls ran exceptional races. Last year Carrie was our number one runner with a time of 22:43. This year we had our top 4 runners under that time, and our 5th runner was just two seconds off."
The hard work has paid off.
"The girls put in a lot of miles over the summer and it really showed," Long continued. "We placed 6th last year and our goal this year was to be in the top four. We were thrilled to place third behind the stellar teams of Minster and Versailles."
Junior Carrie Spurgeon led the way with a time of 21:34, placing 20th. Following right behind was Freshman Tara Snipes who placed 21st with a time of 21:36. Junior Emily Fields was next placing 27th and a time of 21:54. Freshman Jessie Shilt was close behind placing 29th with a time of 21:56. The boys had an outstanding start to their season as well with a sixth place finish.
"Our top five guys were all faster than we were last year, which is a great way to start," said boys coach Josh Long.
Willy Hoffert led the way with a top ten finish, placing 8th running a 17:36.
"That’s an outstanding start for Willy because there are some really good guys in this race," Long said. "The rest of the boys also had some impressive times for their first race of the year."
