|2008 BOYS CROSS COUNRTY TEAM...
The Buccs Cross Country team suffered some key losses from a year ago, but return a solid nucleus and have the potential for another memorable season.
Third year coach Josh Long has a talented group of runners returning from a team that was the first Buccaneer team to qualify for the regional meet in five years.
But the graduation losses of Curtis Dysinger and Zack Gibson, along with the loss of top runner Levi VanDeGrift makes for a challenging season - one Long is confident his team is capable of facing.
"Although the team isn't the same as last year, the boys are working just as hard to achieve the goals we have set," Long said. "They have been diligent about putting in the miles over the summer and are prepared for the challenges ahead."
Covington returns three seniors from last years team - Andy Hittle, Tyler Moody and Darrell Thobe. If the Buccs hope to return to the regional meet, the three seniors will have to lead the way.
That's because the only other upperclassmen returning is junior Michael Rosengarten as the remaining of the roster consists of four sophomores and two freshman.
The sophomores are Willy Hoffert, Brandon Flora, Harry Hicks and Zach Shilt.
"We have some nice runners back (from a year ago)," said Long. "Willy is one of our top runners and Andy (Hittle), Brandon (Flora), Darrell (Thobe) and Zach (Shilt) are right there."
The mixture of youth an experience the Buccs have just ads to the excitement for the season to begin - especially considering the work that has been put in over the summer.
"We're excited to get the season going," Long concluded. "The boys have put in the work. They have great attitudes and are looking forward to that first race. It should be exciting."
The Buccs open the season at the Bob Schul Invitational in West Milton on August 23rd.
