UNION CITY – The first three games of the season didn’t go as well as Covington had hoped for, but the Buccaneers were able to stay focused and capture a win that was expected against Mississinawa Valley on Saturday by the score of 73-44.

“It’s good to get the first one (win) out of the way,” said Covington coach Logan Carey. “There is plenty of room for improvement to get to the standard we want to play, but this is a good team win.”

Covington struggled early as Mississinawa Valley built a 7-2 lead to start the game.

Fortunately, the Buccaneers were able to turn the momentum in a hurry by going on a 19-0 run. This sequence pretty much led to a dominating win as Covington controlled the remainder of the contest.

“We will celebrate this one, but our focus is on stringing some wins together,” Carey said. “That starts with a tough one against Milton on Tuesday.”

Confidence and trust in teammates is a huge key to success and the Buccaneers have struggled with that in the first three losses of the season. Hopefully the performance against Mississinawa Valley leads to more victories for a Buccaneer team that has a lot of potential to put together a very successful season.

Against the Blackhawks, four Buccaneers reached double digits in scoring. Britton Miller led the Buccs with a game-high 29 points, while Bryson Hite had 14 points, Tanner Palsgrove tallied 11 points and Brogen Angle dropped in 10 points.

The win gives Covington a 1-3 overall record and hopefully some momentum to capture its first win in the TRC against Milton-Union (0-5) on Tuesday.
