FAST START SPARKS WIN IN OPENER...
Covington built an early 15-point lead and did just enough to maintain the advantage en route to a 50-34 win over Houston in the season opener.

NOVEMBER 19, 2021 - HOUSTON
The Covington girls basketball team got off to fast start in the season opener on Saturday by building a 15-point lead after one and cruising to a 50-34 win over Houston.

For a team with high expectations, it was the ideal start to the season because Covington showed the potential of being a really good team, but also showed plenty of areas where improvement is needed.

The positives came in the opening frame as the Lady Buccs were relentless on defense and crashing the boards. The defensive pressure prevented Houston from hitting a single field goal and the rebounding limited the Wildcats to one shot opportunity on most possessions in the opening frame.

Houston did manage to knock down a pair of free throws, but the Lady Buccs were rather efficient offensively and the result was a 17-2 lead after one.

The remainder of the game was where Covington showed where improvement is needed as the Lady Buccs held a a slim 33-32 scoring advantage the rest of the way.

It started in the second period as the Lady Buccs suddenly began turning the ball over - mostly from unforced errors. The offense became stagnant and the result was just four points over the remainder of the half.

Houston was able to knock down a pair of threes, along with a bucket and a free throw to put itself back into the game at the break, 21-11.

The momentum Houston gained late in the first half carried over to the second half as the Wildcats played a gritty band determined style of basketball.

Still, Covington's size and experience was enough to maintain its lead throughout as the Lady Buccs cruised to the 16-point win.

The Buccs will host Fairlawn tomorrow night in the home opener with a 6pm reserve start. The Covington reserve team will be playing Beavercreek.

There will be an Alumni game featuring some of Covington's former Lady Buccs beginning at 4:30pm.
