2020-21 LADY BUCCS PREVIEW...
Even with a young team, Covington looks to build on the success from last season in the second year under coach Brandon Studebaker.

Building a program takes time, but second year Covington coach Brandon Studebaker has the Lady Buccs basketball program headed in the right direction.

Last season, it is safe to say the Lady Buccs over achieved in a 10-13 season due to the relentless hustle the girls gave on a nightly basis that led to some big wins against quality programs.

And even though Covington will be very young this year after losing three talented seniors from a year ago in Morgan Kimmel, Morgan Lowe and Josie Crowell, expectations are high due to the development of the returning players and those who join the program as freshmen.

“While we will be an extremely young team, returning only two starters and four girls with varsity experience from last year, I believe we have the ability to compete with the top teams in the league,” Studebaker said. “We have a tough non-conference schedule to help test us throughout the season, beginning with Versailles in our opening game.”

The development can be attributed to a strong junior high staff Studebaker has assembled with former Lady Bucc standout Jessie Crowell and the experience of Josh Long, along with the additions to the high school staff in Kayla McEldowney, Chelsea Clawson and Heather Schneider. Schneider, who many Buccaneer fans remember as Heather Fields, was a dominant player in the early 2000s and is a member of the Covington Athletic Hall of Fame.

“With the girls having spent last season in our system, we look to build upon that, introducing some new things and adjusting to our personnel this season,” Studebaker said. “In an unusual year an off-season, adversity has already struck, canceling two of our scrimmages and our first three games, leaving us with us with little pre-season preparation for our young players. However, we are excited for the season and look forward to getting out on the court.”

Senior Ellie Hedges, junior Claudia Harrington and sophomore Meg Rogers will head up the guard position.

Harrington averaged 13 points and seven rebounds a game last year, Hedges averaged three points per game and Rogers got valuable varsity experience a year ago.

Claire Fraley, a 6-foot junior, will lead the post players after averaging 10 rebounds and seven points a year ago.

Gracie Anderson, a 5-8 freshman and Carlie Besecker, a 5-9 freshman, along with 5-6 junior Parker Metz, round out the roster.

“Gracie (Anderson) will look to be an offensive threat from both the guard and post positions,” Studebaker said. “Carlie (Besecker) will look to be an offensive from the post position, while having the ability to step outside. Parker Metz will round out the varsity roster as an inside threat.”

Adversity has already struck Covington as several kids have missed practice time due to COVID quarantines.

But that hasn't diminished the passion and excitement of what is ahead in the 2020-21 season and beyond.

Because Lady Buccs basketball is headed in the right direction.

Junior Claire Fraley returns to provide Covington an imposing inside presence.
Junior Claudia Harrington returns for her third season at the varsity level.
