LADY BUCCS GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS...
The Covington Lady Buccs rebounded from dropping three of the last four with an impressive 42-36 win over Jackson Center.
Ellie Hedges, the lone senior, continues to provide leadership for a young Covington basketball team.

JANUARY 23, 2021 - JACKSON CENTER
When you are a young basketball team who has dropped three of the last four games things can unravel in a hurry if you fail to stay focused on the big picture.

Successful teams have success when they stay together, trust each other and keep the team goals in focus over individual accolades. Being "ONE" is the reason some teams win against more experienced and athletically talented teams.

This proves true for the Covington Lady Buccs, who through 11 games were 9-2 on the season by defeating some teams who were arguably better on paper - bigger, more athletic and much more experienced.

And after dropping three of the last four to quality teams, the young Lady Buccs refocused on what had led to prior success - playing together.

This led to a huge 42-36 win over Jackson Center on Saturday in the home gym of the Tigers.

No, it wasn't always pretty, but the girls in Covington uniforms gave relentless effort and battled for every point - leading to a 12-8 advantage after one and a 19-16 lead at the break.

The Lady Buccs pushed their advantage to 33-26 lead after three and maintained the six-point advantage throughout the final frame.

Contributions across the board is always critical to success and each player contributed to the win. Freshman Carly Besecker led all scorers with 17 points, while junior Claudia Harrington scored 16 points.

Points are not the only stat to prove worth as evident by the impact on the inside provided by Claire Fraley and the all-around game turned in by freshman Gracie Anderson.

Plus, the return of sophomore Meg Rogers was huge. Rogers, who missed the past month with an injury, gave Covington and extra ball handler and defensive presence that proved vital.

The win improves Covington to 11-5 as the schedule continues to be tough with a road contest at Troy Christan on Monday and then a home outing against Russia on Thursday.
