JANUARY 16, 2021 - COVINGTON
Covington struggled Saturday on the home floor against a gritty Ansonia team, but were still able to come away with a 49-31 win.
Maybe it was a mental letdown coming off of a 65-44 loss to Tri-Village on Thursday, or maybe it was just one of those days - but for some reason the Lady Buccs didn’t execute the way they have done all year.
Still, the relentlessness, selflessness and togetherness that has become Covington’s identity this season carried the Lady Buccs to a win that improved their record to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the CCC.
Covington seemed out of sync early as Ansonia surged to a slim 6-5 lead midway through the opening frame.
Fortunately, the Lady Buccs were able to get out of their funk by outscoring Ansonia 20-8 over the remainder of the first half to claim a 25-13 lead at the break.
Covington opened up the second half in the same manner it started the game - out of sync.
And Ansonia took advantage by playing the Lady Buccs even for much of the third quarter until Covington hit a couple of big shots to push its lead to 43-25 with one quarter to play.
From there the Lady Buccs emptied their bench and cruised to an 19-point win.
Claudia Harrington led the Lady Buccs with a game-high 19 points - 12 of those coming on four treys.
Carlie Besecker dropped in 15 points, while Ellie Hedges scored 7 points while continuing to show her senior leadership by playing relentlessly at both end of the floor.
At the end of the day a win is a win, but Covington is full aware that it will need a better performance next Tuesday in a makeup game at rival Bradford.
