FEBRUARY 11, 2020 - TROY
The Covington Lady Buccs closed out the regular season on Monday at Troy and saw their record dip to 10-12 overall with a 55-42 loss.
But, there were many positives the Lady Buccs can use as a springboard into the tournament, which will begin on Saturday at 12:30pm against Springfield Central Catholic at Brookville High School.
The effort the girls gave was much better than what was on display this past Saturday in a loss at Houston.
The Lady Buccs played right with Troy until a couple of unfortunate bad breaks late in the third quarter resulted into a six-point swing for the Trojans and a 39-30 lead.
They were bad breaks Covington couldn’t overcome as it sparked the Trojans, who were celebrating senior night, as they knocked down four of their seven treys in the final frame to pull away for the 55-42 win.
Up until the final minute of the third, the outcome of the game was tilted in favor of either team.
Covington got off to a fast start for a 12-6 lead and the score was knotted at 20-20 at the break despite two starters being on the bench for much of the second frame - Claire Fraley in foul trouble and Morgan Kimmel being assessed for a head injury.
The third period was back-and-forth with neither team being able to claim much of an advantage until back-to-back plays didn’t go Covington’s way - plays Troy, to its credit, was able to convert into points at the other end for what was at the minimum a six-point swing.
Troy, who improved to 14-8 with the win, was led in scoring by Makenna Taylor, who scored a game-high 21 points. Tia Bass tallied 18 points and Macie Taylor had 13 points.
Covington, who drops to 10-12 on the season, was led with 17 points by Claudia Harrington.
