JANUARY 14, 2020 - RUSSIA
The Covington girls never could get into an offensive flow on Tuesday as the Russia Raiders and the result was a 41-34 defeat.
Russia frustrated Covington with a half court trap, forcing the Lady Buccs into uncharacteristic turnovers and limiting Covington ability to get into an offensive set.
It resulted into a frustrating first half as Covington was limited to 11 points in the half - seven in the first and four in the second.
Fortunately for Covington, its own defense kept the game within reach as the Lady Buccs trailed 18-11 at the break.
The offensive frustration continued in the second half until a pair of treys by Claudia Harrington sparked a Covington surge. The Lady Buccs chipped into the Russia lead and closed the gap to 36-34 with just under 2:00 left in the contest.
Unfortunately the Lady Buccs couldn’t take advantage of free opportunities to cash in on points at the free throw line as they misfired on several front ends of one-and-ones in the second half and made just 6 of 12 free throws in the game.
Russia was able to close out the contest by making just enough plays down the stretch to hold on for the seven-point win.
The Lady Buccs drop to 7-8 (5-3 CCC) to Russia tonight 34-41. Covington will host Bethel Thursday in a Coaches vs Cancer game.
