LADY BUCCS OVERCOME SLOW START...
It wasn't the prettiest of wins, but the Covington Lady Buccs overcame a slow start to pull away from Newton and tip off the new year with a win.

JANUARY 3, 2019 - COVINGTON
Whether it was a mental lapse from last week's success in the inaugural Buccaneer Holiday Classic or a break from the normal routine due to the holiday break, the Covington Lady Buccs struggled to find a rhythm in the early going of Thursday's contest against rival Newton.

Over the first five-minutes of the first quarter Covington just couldn't get shots to fall. Even leading scorer Sammi Whiteman had wide open looks bounce off the rim one after another.

Fortunately for the Lady Buccs, junior Morgan Kimmel was able to salvage some early possessions with sticklebacks and trips to the free throw line, but Newton hung close until Whiteman hit a runner and Claudia Harrington hit a three-pointer to give Covington a 17-9 lead after one.

Suddenly the flood gates opened as the shots which bounced off the rim in the first quarter for Covington started to hit the bottom of the net.

And it was Whiteman who started the surge with a jumper from the baseline and the finished the 23-8 scoring advantage in the frame with a buzzer-beating trey.

At the break Covington led 40-17 and Whiteman had already scored 18 of her game-high 22 points.

Covington continued to score at will in the third quarter, but the points came from other players. Lauren Christian scored all six of her points in the frame, while Lillian Hamilton, Makenzee Maschino, Morgan Lowe, Morgan Kimmel and Claudia Harrington all contributed to the 16 of the Lady Buccs’ 20 points in the third.

Leading 60-22 to start the final eight-minutes, Covington emptied its bench throughout the entire fourth quarter.

Newton was able to outscore the Lady Buccs 13-5 in the frame, but it wasn't enough as Covington opened up the new year with a convincing 64-35 win.

Sammi Whiteman led all scorers with 22 points, while Claudia Harrington dropped in 11 points.

Newton was led in scoring by Brooke Deeter, who scored 11 points.

The win is the 599th win in the history of the Lady Bucc basketball program as Covington improves to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in the CCC. The Lady Buccs will look for win number 600 on Saturday at home against Arcanum.
