DECEMBER 4, 2020 - PLEASANT HILL
I was a frustrating night for the Covington Buccaneers as they took one on the chin against neighboring rival Newton on Friday, falling by the score of 56-43.
And it was Newton’s defensive pressure that gave Covington fits all night as the Indians pressure led to turnover after turnover in the final three quarters of play.
Up to that point, Covington controlled the action for a 19-10 lead after one thanks to four treys and a pair of buckets inside the paint from Owen Boehringer and Jake Hamilton.
But shots inside the arc became a rarity for Covington over the second and third quarters as only one shot from inside the paint fell - which was a runner by Wes Gooding late in the third.
By then Newton had built a 42-35 lead thanks to a 22-8 scoring onslaught in the second and a 10-8 scoring advantage in the third.
The Buccaneers couldn’t get any closer throughout the entire fourth quarter as Newton connected on seven of 11 free throws down the stretch to pull away with the 13-point win.
In all, Covington connected on eight three-pointers on the night, but only converted on seven shots from two-point range. The Buccaneers also struggled at the charity stripe, making just five of 11 free throws.
Newton was more efficient, converting on 18 two-point buckets and 11 pf 20 from, the line. The Indians also made three three-pointers to round out their 56-point scoring performance.
Chandler Peters led the Indians with a game-high 23 points, while Covington was led in scoring by Wes Gooding with 11 points and 10 points from Jake Hamilton.
The Buccaneers drop to 0-2 on the young season and look to regroup tomorrow night at Versailles.
