DECEMBER 9, 2018 - VERSAILLES
The Covington Buccaneers received a career-high 17 points from junior Kleyton Maschino, but couldn’t find enough offensive success in other areas in a 54-35 defeat to Versailles on Saturday.
The loss drops Covington to 1-2 on the young season as the Buccaneers have a full week to prepare for a very talented Franklin Monroe team next Friday.
Covington hung right with Versailles for much of the early going, tying the score at 15-15 late in the opening frame. But Versailles went on a 22-0 run before Covington managed to hit a pair of buckets before the half.
Trailing 37-19 to start the second half, the Buccaneers played the Tigers virtually even in a low scoring second half with Versailles holing a 17-16 scoring advantage after the break.
Where Covington struggled offensively was inside the paint against a smothering Versailles defense and in the ability to get to the free throw line. The Buccs only managed nine buckets inside the three-point line and only went to the line twice in the entire contest, making two-of-four attempts.
Versailles made 17 shots from inside the arc and had much more success getting to the line as it made eight-of-eleven attempts.
Covington dropped in five three-pointers - three coming from Maschino - and Versailles hit on three treys.
