JANUARY 8, 2019 - COVINGTON
Wins have been hard to come by through the first ten games of the season for the Covington Buccaneers, so when a golden opportunity arises against an evenly matched team on the home floor it's essential that opportunity is taken advantage of.
Unfortunately the Buccaneers let one such opportunity slip away Tuesday at home against Tri-County North, falling 60-56.
Covington was able to get off to a fast start as Andrew Cates and Zach Kuntz combined to score ten of the Buccs' twelve points in the opening frame for a 12-7 lead after one.
Buckets by Kuntz and Tyler Fraley pushed the advantage to 16-7 early in the second, but the visiting Panthers went on a 13-4 run over the remainder of the half to tie the score at the break.
Chad Yohey hit a trey and a runner, while Cates and Fraley dropped in buckets to go along with two free throws by Kuntz to account for the eleven points put up by the Buccs in the third, but Tri-County North was able to take a one-point lead with one quarter to play, 32-31.
Suddenly a low scoring game turned into a track meet in the fourth as the two teams traded bucket after bucket at each end of the floor.
With the game knotted at 49-49, the game turned very ugly with two technical fouls and a scrum in front of the Panther bench. Covington couldn't take advantage of the momentum thanks to its inability to take care of the basketball by committing unforced turnovers from attempting to make "no-look" passes.
The Panthers were able to take advantage by pushing its lead to five points with under a minute to go before Cates hit three of four free throws to cut the Panther lead to 58-56. The Buccs then got the defensive stop they needed and had the ball with a chance to tie the score or take the lead in the final possession.
Once again, the Buccaneers turned the ball over and Tri-County North hit on two free throws to make the final score 60-56 in favor of the visitors.
Cates led the Buccaneers in scoring with 17 points, ten of those coming in the fourth quarter. Zach Kuntz had 14 and Chad Yohey scored 10.
Tri-County North was led in scoring by Dylan Stinson, who tallied a game-high 24 points.
The Buccs fall to 2-8 on the season (2-3 in the CCC) and hope to rebound on Saturday against National Trail.
