Covington boys basketball coach Matt Pond returns for the seventh season as the head coach of the Covington boys basketball team.

Coming off a 5-18 season, Pond has one goal.

"Playing our best basketball at the end of the season," Pond said. "That is what everybody is looking for. As long as we are getting better with every game."

The Buccs return several starters in seniors Gray Harshbarger and Chad Yohey, as well as three players that have a lot of varsity experience in senior Tyler Fraley and juniors Andrew Cates and Kleyton Maschino.

Rounding out the roster will be senior Jack Shell, juniors Zach Kuntz, Spencer Brumbaugh and Kadin Presser and sophomores Jaden Barhorst and Jakob Hamilton.

"I think we will be longer than last year," Pond said. "Our guards have good length."

The Buccs will have a familiar look on offense.

"We will run the motion offense," Pond said. "We might mix in a little transition. But, that is dependent on the kids making good decisions."

Defensively, the Buccs will change things up.

" We will play a lot of man," Pond said. "We will mix in some zone."

As usual, the Buccs will play a strong non-conference schedule.

"We have picked up some new teams," Pond said. "Brookville is D-III and Graham and Northwestern are both D-II. Then, we have the usual staples like Versailles, Milton-Union - Lehman Catholic is back on the schedule and that will be a good game for us."

The conference will be just as challenging.

"I think it is wide open," Pond said. "There are a lot of really good basketball players in the conference. It will be interesting."

In the end, Pond just wants to see improvement with every game and have the team playing its best basketball when it matters most.

Senior Tyler Fraley and the Buccs hope to be playing their best basketball when the post-season tournament begins.
Senior Chad Yohey returns as the floor leader for the Buccs.
