JANUARY 30, 2019 - BROOKVILLE
The Covington boys basketball team ran into a buzzsaw Tuesday night at Brockville as the host Blue Devils torched the nets from start to finish in handing the Buccaneers an 80-41 defeat.
And it was the sharp shooting on sophomore AJ Eller that sparked the impressive performance by the Blue Devils. Ellen finished with seven treys and a game-high 31 points.
But Eller wasn't a one-man show by any means as Brookville received balanced scoring with three other players dropping in double digits; Wade Turner with 15 points and 11 points each from Manny Willis and Jacob Gudorf.
Covington was led in scoring with 11 points by Kleyton Maschino and Andrew Cates dropped in 10 points as well.
The tone of the game was established from the outset as Covington couldn't keep pace with the high scoring, fast pace attack of Brookville.
The Blue Devils built a 15-2 lead, capped by a two-handed slam by Manny Willis to force a Buccaneer timeout.
Kleyton Maschino was able to respond with a three and Andrew Cates hit on a free throw, but Brookville was able to extend its lead to 20-6 after one.
Covington, which struggled finding the bottom of the net all night, managed just three field goals in the second on buckets by Cates, Tyler Fraley and Kadin Presser - along with a pair of free throws by Gray Harshbarger and another by Cates.
Brookville broke the game open by scoring 23 points in the frame to push its lead to 43-15 at the break.
Having already dropped in 14 points, Eller took over the game in the second half with five treys and a bucket before seeing his night end early in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Devils were able to push their advantage to 63-29 after three and close the show in the fourth quarter for the 39-point win.
The loss drops Covington's record to 3-11 on the season as it prepares for back-to-back home games against Bethel on Friday and Northwestern on Saturday.
