MAY 3, 2016 - PITSBURG
The Covington Buccaneers traveled to Pitsburg on Tuesday and grabbed an impressive 12-2 win over Franklin Monroe.
And the tone of the game was set early as the Buccaneers took advantage of Franklin Monroe mistakes - starting with James Grilliot reaching on an error in the first at bat of the game. It sparked a two-run inning for the Buccs.
Franklin Monroe scored in the bottom of the first, but the Buccaneers plated a run in the second to push the lead to 3-1.
Again, the home team cut into the Covington lead with a run in the third, but that would be the final time Franklin Monroe would score.
Covington then put the game away with four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings for a 12-2 win.
Nathan Blei went the distance to pick up the win. He struck out eight and walked three.
"Nathan didn't have his best stuff tonight, but he battled through it," said Covington coach Mitch Hirsch. "We didn't help him in the field with the three errors, so we still need to get better defensively. We hit the ball hard tonight though."
James Grilliot went 3-for-4 with a triple and four rbi's, while Jarred Williams went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three rbi's.
Mason Dilley and Kenney Atkinson both connected for two base hist with Dilley recording a double.
Zach Hyre was tagged with the loss on the hill, but was hurt by two errors behind him. He tried to make up for it at the plate by going 3-for-3 on the day.
Cade McGlinch was 2-for-4 and Trevor Collins had a hit for the Jets, who finished with six hits as a team.
Covington hosts Bethel tomorrow night in a make-up game.
