APRIL 28, 2011 - COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers captured their second straight win on Thursday, beating Franklin Monroe 7-2 on the home field.
The win improves Covington's record to 5-9 overall and 5-2 in the CCC.
"We're getting better," said Covington coach Mitch Hirsch. "From the beginning of the season to now, we're a much better team."
A team learning how to take advantage of opportunities given to them.
Despite only getting four hits on the afternoon, the Buccs took advantage of five walks, three hit batters and four Franklin Monroe errors to put seven runs on the board.
"That's what good teams do," said Hirsch in regards to making teams pay for their mistakes. "The kids were aggressive running the bases and took advantage of the opportunities they gave us."
Covington jumped on FrankliN Monroe early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The big hit came from Kellen Woloch on a double that scored two of the three runs.
Woloch recorded two of the four hits for Covington with Bryton Lear and Steven Blei reaching base on singles.
"We didn't get that many hits, but we only struck out three times tonight," Hirshc said. "Good things happen when you put the ball in play and we put the ball in play a lot. We had some kids put down some nice sacrifice bunts that scored some runs for us."
Austin Angle put together another solid outing on the mound as well. The sophomore went the distance and struck out four batters.
"Austin threw pretty well," Hirsch said. "We played pretty good defense behind him too."
Covington looks to keep the momentum rolling as it travels to Mississinawa Valley tomorrow.
