BUCCS FALL TO BLAZERS, 10-5...
Covington had its chances, but couldn't overcome a game of inches in a loss to National Trail.
APRIL 10, 2010 - COVINGTON
A 10-5 score may not show it, but it was a game of inches Tuesday between Covington and National Trail.
"We were right there," said Covington coach Mitch Hirsch after the Buccs dropped their ninth game of the season. "A couple of plays here and there go our way and we are in the game."
In the bottom of the sixth inning Covington had the bases loaded with two outs and C.J. Poling drilled what appeared to be a base hit. But the National Trail second baseman managed to leap high in the air and pull down the snow cone catch to end the threat."
"Another inch or two higher and we score at least two runs," Hirsch explained. "C.J. also had a play at short that took a bad hop and nearly took his head off. We also had a couple of plays in the outfield where I felt catches could have been made. It was that kind of night."
It was also a night where National Trail hit the ball often, and hit it hard.
"They're always a good hitting baseball team," Hirsch praised of the Blazers. "It's not like we played bad defense. They just hit the ball very well."
Both teams scored a run in the opening inning, but National Trail scored five runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 9-1 lead.
Covington responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth to cut the margin to 9-5.
But Covington went three-and-out in the fifth and couldn't capitalize on opportunities in the sixth.
Brandon Powell picked up the loss on the mound for Covington as he went into the second inning before being replaced by Jake Bitner.
Bitner pitched through the sixth inning, while Adam Craft threw in the seventh inning for the Buccs.
Andrew DeHart went 2-3 with two RBI and Dylan Fortner doubled. Four more Buccaneers had base hits as well.
Covington drops to 2-9 overall and 1-1 in the CCC with a road trip to Tri-County North on Thursday next on the schedule.
