BUCCS LOSE OPENER TO ANNA...
Errors and a failure to get the bats going cost Covington in a 3-1 season-opening loss to Anna.
MARCH 30, 2010 - ANNA
Failing to get the bats going in the early part of the season is an annual issue for a lot of teams - as it was for the Covington Buccaneers in their season opener at Anna on Tuesday.
The Buccaneers could only manage one run on four hits in a 3-1 loss to the Rockets.
Andrew DeHart went 1-for-2 with a run, while Jake Bitner, Brandon Flora and Dylan Fortner each batted 1-for-3 on the afternoon. Bitner's hit went for an RBI double.
Left hander Jake Stewart started the contest on the mound and settled down after giving up a run in the first inning to pitch 3 and one-third scoreless innings.
Meanwhile, Covington tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the third on a double by Bitner that scored DeHart.
The game would remain deadlocked until Anna scored 2 runs in the bottom off the sixth to steal the win.
Sophomore Brandon Powell picked up the loss in relief of Stewart. Powell hurled one and two-thirds of an inning for the Buccs.
Stewart and Powell combined to allow just 3 hits on the day in a solid effort on the mound by both pitchers.
The Buccaneer defense committed 2 errors on the afternoon, while Anna had just one.
Covington (0-1) looks to get the bats out on Wednesday at home against West Milton and against Graham on Thursday.
