BUCCS BEAT SOUTH AND MISSISSINAWA IN DH...
With the weather wreaking havoc on the schedule, the Covington Buccaneers played Twin Valley South and Mississinawa Valley back-to-back and came away with two wins.

MAY 9, 2009 - COVINGTON
Covington coach Mitch Hirsch had a talk with his Friday in practice about what has been his team's downfall in the four losses in the past six games.

"We had a little talk about staying focused and being ready to play under any circumstance," Hirsch explained. "That's what good teams do and if we want to get to where we want to be, then we have to take care of those things. When we come out here (to the baseball field) everything needs to be about baseball."

Evidently the kids listened as the Buccs cruised by Twin Valley South in the first game 8-3 and then throttled Mississinawa Valley 15-1 in the second contest.

"I thought we played much better today," said Hirsch. "Defensively, we had a couple of errors, but they weren't dumb errors. I can live with that because we didn't make the type of errors that gets you beat."

Nate Lavey had a huge day for Covington as he pitched a complete game against Twin Valley South and then went 3 for 5 with a grand slam and five RBI against Mississinawa Valley.

Sophomore Jake Stewart also pitched a complete game as he held Mississinawa Valley to just one hit and struck out 13 batters.

Adam Craft tripled, while Andy Sparks, Jake Bitner, Kyle Kanet, Chris Long and Jake Stewart each connected for a double.

Covington recorded 18 hits on the day (five against South and 13 against Mississinawa) as all nine starters had at least one hit.

"We kept the pressure on both teams today," Hirsch said. "That's what we need to do every game."

Covington improves to 14-5-2 overall and 9-2 in the CCC.
