BUCCS OVERCOME ERRORS TO BEAT ARCANUM...
The Covington Buccaneers recorded a season-high six errors, but still managed to capture an 8-5 win over Arcanum.

April 23, 2009 - COVINGTON
It's been nearly a week since Covington saw the baseball field as Tuesday's game was cancelled and all but one practice was held in the gym.

"Yesterday was the first time we've been outside since the North game (last Friday)," said Covington coach Mitch Hirsch. "We're tired of being in the gym. You can still work on some things, but not being outside for such a long time can hurt you too."

And it showed Thursday as Covington had to overcome a season-high six errors to defeat a gritty Arcanum team 8-5.

"Defensively, we were terrible," Hirsch said. "Andy (Sparks) threw well and only allowed one earned run. But he had to throw too many extra pitches because we didn't back him up very well. That's disappointing."

Sparks did go five innings and allowed just two hits. Nate Lavey relieved Sparks in the sixth and recorded the save.

Covington started the scoring in the bottom of the first with two runs, but Arcanum tied the score in the top of the third thanks to Buccaneer miscues. The Buccs had three errors in the inning, all coming on routine plays.

"I don't know what it is," said Hirsch in regards to the errors. "Maybe it was because we haven't been outside much or maybe it was a lack of focus. Whatever it is, we need to get it straightened out and play better than that."

Fortunately Covington swung the bats well - recording 11 hits on the day.

This resulted in a five-run fifth inning and another in the sixth to keep Arcanum at bey.

"We made good contact," Hirsch said. "Four of our hits were doubles."

Those doubles came from Logan Woloch, Nate Lavey, Kyle Kanet and Chirs Long.

Kanet went 3-3, Long 2-3 and Woloch and Lavey both went 2-4. Kanet, Lavey and Long each pounded in two runs a piece.

The victory improves Covington's record to 10-1-2 with another key Cross County Conference match-up at Bradford tomorrow.

"We better be ready to play," Hirsch said in regards to playing at Bradford. "Bradford's a good team and I know they'll be ready to play. We'll have to play a lot better than we did tonight."
