2007 BASEBALL PREVIEW...
Expectations are high as the Buccaneer roster is full of talented and experienced players.
Throughout the history of Covington baseball rarely has there been so much anticipation and excitement for a baseball season to begin. That's because the Covington roster is full of talented players with extended varsity experience.
The Buccs only lose one player from a year ago in Luke Stacy, who has remained in uniform as an assistant coach.
Virtually everyone else returns from a squad that finished 11-11 overall and 6-3 in the Cross County Conference standings. One of those victories was against rival Bethel, who went on to finish as state runner-up.
The strength of the Buccaneer squad may be the pitching staff with senior lefty, Brad Plank leading the charge. Add David Moss, Darrell Thobe, Andy Sparks, Drew Craft, Brent Shively, Brian Beckstedt and Arliss Clark to the rotation and the Buccs are deep in pitchers.
Another strength will be senior leadership as eight seniors man the roster - Brian Beckstedt, Derek Brumbaugh, Arliss Clark, Drew Craft, Alberto Dominguez, Tyler Kanet, Brad Plank and Gene Studebaker.
Head coach Mitch Hirsch has the flexibility to move players to various positions due to the athleticism on the squad.
Studebaker has seen action last season at center field and shortstop, while Craft saw action at right and first base along with Plank.
With Stacy gone from second base, options include a number of players in Kyle Kanet, Nate Lavey, Brian Beckstedt, David Moss and others.
Much like first and second base, shortstop is another position of depth as Studebaker, Kyle Kanet and David Moss are all capable players.
Third base has been in steady hands for some time and will likely continue with junior Jordy Burelison. Catcher is also in proven hands with senior Tyler Kanet.
The outfield could also see a number of faces with Studebaker, Craft, Sparks, Lavey, Beckstedt, Clark, Thobe and others.
With the talent the Buccaneers have on the roster, expectations are high for an extended season. The schedule should provide a challenge and prepare Covington for the tournament in May.
