PREVENTING A LETDOWN...

The Covington Buccaneers avoided a letdown from Sunday night's festivities at Fifth Third Field as they held off Miami East for a 7-6 conference win.

April 30, 2007 – COVINGTON
After a memorable night at Fifth Third Field last night, the primary concern for the Covington Buccaneers was a letdown against Miami East, Monday. After all, the Buccs were on a high after pounding out 14 runs in a twelve-point win over Houston in what was a late night.

"I was worried we'd be a little tired from last night," said Mitch Hirsch, the Buccaneers coach. "It was a great time for the kids and I'm sure they were still thinking about it. It's tough to come back and play the next day after a night like that."

The Buccs nearly gift wrapped a comeback win for Miami East with two seventh inning errors that resulted in 2 runs. Fortunately for Covington, the Vikings left the tying run on base to end the contest with the Buccs holding on for a 7-6 win.

"We didn't play very good defensively," said Hirsch. "We had three errors tonight and were a little sluggish."

The Buccs broke open a scoreless game in the third with three runs, but the Vikings responded with 2 runs in the top of the fourth.

Another run in the bottom of the fourth gave the Buccs a 4-2 lead, but Covington missed a golden opportunity to break the game open as the bases were left loaded.

Miami East tied the score in the top of the fifth on a monster two-run home run by Brandon Sizemore. The senior hit the ball over left-center field into a gusty wind.

The Buccs responded with a run in the bottom on the fifth and then two more in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead with Miami East to bat in the top of the seventh.

In spite of two critical errors that resulted in runs, the Buccs held on for the win.

David Moss picked up the win for the Buccs as he went the distance and struck out six batters. He also helped himself at the plate by going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.

Drew Craft had a good night as well, going 3 for 4 with a double and Brad Plank recorded 2 RBI on a 2 for 4 night. Nate Lavey doubled as well.

The victory improves Covington's record to 13-3 on the season and 8-0 in Cross County Conference play. The Buccs host Ansonia on Tuesday.
